The Promise of Life

I bought this parsley plant because of the nice big caterpillar crawling on it in hopes that we would be able to watch it become a moth or butterfly. It was only a few days after I brought it home that I was worried the little thing had died cause it was so still and then the next morning found this...

John and Mark were both mildly interested, I was excited because of course it's science/nature stuff. One afternoon I was getting ready to make supper and the fluttering caught my eye, voila, the promise of life was revealed and a beautiful butterfly was trying to get out of our window. I wish that I could have watched escape it's crysalyis, but getting to see it fly free outside was amazing and we will definitely be doing this again. Now of course to identify the butterfly, more fun!

I guess, I've not looked it up yet, but will start there, thanks!

Ewe is right, Gina. It's a black swallowtail. We've seen many of those in our gardens over the years. We've even accidentally had some in our house over the winter. Weird. It's this sort of thing that make me love gardening the most.

Have fun!

Oh cool! Melanie this is the kind of stuff that makes me like going outside too. I was so excited the other day when John touched a toad, he was never able to do that before and this year he let it walk on his leg and hop off his knee and as silly as it sounds that was just awesome. This is the first year that I've felt good enough to go outside and oh I love it!

I wouldn't have known a few weeks ago, but we are currently studying butterflies and moths in science and I've learned a lot along with the boys!
I have never liked planting flowers and that kind of gardening. I've only enjoyed vegetable gardens because of the motivation to get the veggies. The boys are trying to convince me to plant flowers to attract butterflies. That might be enough motivation to plant more flowers here!

I have always thought flower gardens were a bit fussy, and the venue of fussy old ladies who were too old to go do fun stuff, but either I am becoming a fussy old lady which I adamantly refuse to believe or I have just fallen in love with the bright little faces of all the flowers, that's the one. The butterflies and such are a big attractant and really I just like the beauty of it all, just seeing God's hand in these creations makes me more content in my day to day life. I'm voting plant some flowers for the boys, lol, you never know you might be hooked too :)
